How to make money on Amazon: every route Amazon offers, and what each one really takes

How to make money on Amazon depends on what you bring: money to buy stock, a skill to make or design things, an audience, or time. This guide lays out every route Amazon itself offers, from selling products to publishing books, affiliate links and delivery driving, with what each costs and requires.

  • There are three families of routes: selling products you stock, selling without inventory, and earning without selling anything.
  • Selling needs a plan: Individual at $0.99 per item sold or Professional at $39.99 a month, plus referral fees and any fulfillment costs.
  • Merch on Demand and Kindle Direct Publishing let you sell designs and books with no inventory; Amazon prints and ships.
  • Amazon Associates pays up to 10% in commissions on qualifying purchases; Amazon Flex says most drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour, varying by location.
  • Amazon's averages, such as US independent sellers averaging over $375,000 in 2025 sales, are averages, not a forecast for a new seller.

How to make money on Amazon: the three routes

Amazon's own guide to making money with Amazon lists eleven ways, from specializing in a niche to affiliate marketing and livestreams, and says some need no selling at all while others need little upfront investment. Add Amazon's other programs, such as delivery driving and publishing, and the options group into three families.

The first is selling physical products you stock: private label, wholesale, reselling, handmade and refurbished goods. The second is selling without inventory: dropshipping, print on demand merch and self-published books, where someone else produces or ships each order. The third is earning without selling: recommending products, creating content, or working for Amazon.

Three ways to make money on Amazon: selling products you stock, selling without holding inventory, and earning without selling anything. 01 Sell products you buy or make stock most upside, most risk 02 No inventory Amazon or a supplier makes and ships low cost to start 03 No selling links, content, driving income for your time or audience

Selling products on Amazon

Selling physical products is the most direct route. Amazon says more than 60% of sales in its store come from independent sellers, most of them small and medium-sized businesses. The routes differ in where the product comes from and how much control you have.

Amazon's advice for all of them is to start focused: one product or a few in one niche, with a clear view of demand, competition, inventory and margins. Our guides to Amazon private label, wholesale products to sell on Amazon and the Amazon Renewed program go deeper.

Making money on Amazon without inventory

Amazon lists several inventory-free routes: dropshipping, Merch on Demand and Kindle Direct Publishing. Their appeal, in Amazon's words, is low startup cost, less financial risk and a quick start, because nothing is bought before it sells.

Merch on DemandUpload a 300 dpi design, choose products and colors; Amazon prints, ships and handles customer serviceA royalty on every product sold, no upfront costs

ACXProduce audiobooks and sell them through AudibleRoyalties through Audible
DropshippingA supplier ships each order under your nameThe margin between your price and the supplier's cost

Merch on Demand is non-exclusive, so the same design can be sold elsewhere, and its products ship with Prime. KDP lets you publish in more than 10 countries and over 45 languages. For dropshipping, the seller of record rules apply; our guide to Amazon dropshipping covers them, and our guide to what KDP means covers publishing.

Publishing books with Kindle Direct Publishing

Kindle Direct Publishing, or KDP, is Amazon's self-publishing platform for ebooks and print books. Amazon's guide to selling without inventory walks through the steps: create a KDP account, check the manuscript for errors with Kindle Previewer, format it for Kindle readers, then upload your manuscript as a Word document, PDF, plain text, MobiPocket or ePub file.

Next you add the book's details and metadata so customers can find it in Amazon search, add a clear cover that stands out, and select Save and Publish. After Amazon approves it, the book goes on sale. Print books are printed on demand when customers order, so you hold no stock.

Publishing a book with Kindle Direct Publishing: prepare the manuscript, upload it, add details, keywords and a cover, then publish after Amazon's approval. Prepare Upload Describe Publish Kindle Previewer, formatting Word, PDF, ePub and more details, keywords, cover after Amazon's approval
Print copies are made only when someone buys

Like any product, a book needs readers to find it. The metadata and keywords you enter decide where it appears in Amazon search, and a book with no promotion rarely sells on its own. Our guide to what KDP means covers the program in more detail.

Making money with Amazon without selling anything

You do not need to sell products to earn with Amazon. Amazon's own list includes affiliate marketing, the Influencer program and Amazon Live, and Amazon also pays people to deliver packages and lets agencies sell services to sellers.

Associates has an entry rule worth knowing: Amazon reviews your application once you have driven at least three qualified sales within 180 days. Amazon Vine is not a way to earn money: Amazon says Vine Voices are not paid for reviews, though they receive free products. Our guide to Amazon SPN covers selling services to sellers.

Passive income on Amazon: what is really passive

Several routes are often described as passive income: affiliate links, merch designs and self-published books. They can keep earning after the work is done, but the work comes first. A book needs writing and promotion, a design needs to find buyers, and affiliate content needs an audience that trusts your recommendations, often built on a blog or social media.

Selling products is the least passive route, even with FBA handling shipping. Product research, listings, advertising, reorders and customer questions continue every week. The trade is that it also has the most room to grow into a business.

  3. Create a selling account and choose a plan: Individual or Professional.
  4. Source the product legitimately, and check whether it needs approval.

  6. Choose fulfillment: FBA, your own shipping, or a supplier.
  7. Launch with advertising and early reviews, then refine from the data.

New sellers can qualify for Amazon's New Seller Incentives, which Amazon values at over $50,000 in credits and benefits. Our guides to the best products on Amazon and how Amazon FBA works cover steps two and six.

What it costs to make money selling on Amazon

Selling has a fee structure every seller should know before counting profit. Amazon's pricing page lists two selling plans: Individual, at $0.99 per item sold, and Professional, at $39.99 a month. On top of the plan, every sale pays a referral fee that depends on the category, charged as a percentage of the total price or a minimum amount, whichever is greater.

Fulfillment is the next cost: FBA fees if Amazon ships, or your own labels and packing if you ship. Then product cost, advertising and returns. Profit is what is left, and it is the only number that answers the question of making money.

$0.99 per item soldSuits fewer than about 40 sales a month
Professional plan
$39.99 a monthUnlocks ads, bulk tools and more

Amazon's FBA guidance suggests the Professional plan may be more cost-effective from about 40 sales a month. Our ACoS calculator shows how much advertising a product's margin can carry.

What to realistically expect

Amazon publishes encouraging averages: independent sellers in the US averaged more than $375,000 in annual sales in its store in 2025, and more than 75,000 passed $1 million. Those are sales, not profit, and averages pulled up by the largest sellers. A new seller's first year usually looks very different.

The routes also pay on different timelines. Associates commissions arrive about 60 days after the month they are earned. Selling products ties money up in stock and launch advertising before profit appears. Flex pays for hours worked. Choose a route whose timeline you can afford.

Fees, fulfillment, ads and returns come out first.

Reselling from invalid sources

Amazon notes some forms of reselling are not permitted.

No audience for Associates

Commissions need traffic; build the audience first.

Using others' designs

Merch on Demand requires original artwork that respects trademarks and copyrights.

Expecting averages

Amazon's seller averages are not a new seller's first year.
