The Amazon Renewed program: selling refurbished products with Amazon's guarantee
The Amazon Renewed program lets approved sellers list professionally refurbished, pre-owned and open-box products on their own Renewed listings, backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee. This guide covers who qualifies, what the application needs, the condition grades, pricing rules, listing, and how to keep selling privileges.
Key takeaways
- Amazon Renewed is for refurbished products with electrical or mechanical parts that can be replaced, upgraded and quality checked, such as phones, computers, cameras, appliances and power tools.
- In the US, resellers must show invoices for at least $50,000 of qualifying refurbished purchases in the past 90 days, or 180 days for some categories; Apple needs $2.5 million.
- Existing sellers need an order defect rate of 0.8% or less over the trailing 60 days, and must keep it.
- Renewed products must be priced at least 5% below the new version and the next higher Renewed grade; there is no extra fee to join.
- Every Renewed product is covered by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee, and the seller is responsible for claims under it.
What the Amazon Renewed program is
Amazon Renewed is Amazon's store for pre-owned and refurbished products. Amazon's seller page describes it as a program that lets you repair or refurbish pre-owned electronics, phones, computers and other products, then sell them to Amazon customers worldwide. Renewed products have their own listings, separate from new ones, and customers see them with a Renewed condition grade.
What sets it apart from selling used goods is the quality promise. Amazon says Renewed products are professionally inspected and tested by qualified suppliers, and every one is backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee. In return, Amazon sets an application bar, pricing rules and ongoing quality checks, including test buys.

Which products the Amazon Renewed program accepts
Amazon says products must contain electrical or mechanical components that can be replaced or upgraded and checked for quality assurance. Its program policies list the permitted product types, and you contact Renewed Selling Partner Support to request approval for a product not on the list.
| Group | Examples from Amazon's permitted list |
|---|---|
| Computers and phones | Laptops, desktops, tablets, components, smartphones, e-book readers, smart watches |
| Audio and video | TVs, projectors, soundbars, headphones, streaming players, cameras and lenses |
| Musical instruments | Guitars, keyboards, drums, wind and string instruments |
| Kitchen appliances | Coffee makers, blenders, air fryers, microwaves, refrigerators, dishwashers |
| Home | Vacuums, air conditioners, heaters, fans, air purifiers |
| Lawn, garden and tools | Mowers, trimmers, pressure washers, drills, saws, generators, compressors |
| Mobility and auto | E-bikes, e-scooters, engine components |
Products that cannot be repaired or refurbished, or that pose a hygiene or safety risk, are removed from Renewed, Amazon's policy says. Some brands also need their own approval before you can list them.
Who qualifies to sell on Amazon Renewed
Amazon says you must have experience selling repaired or refurbished products and be able to show you meet its quality requirements. It names six types of Renewed seller: distributors or resellers, manufacturers or brand owners, brand-authorized refurbishers, refurbishers, repairers, and IT asset disposition providers. Existing sellers must keep an order defect rate of 0.8% or less over the trailing 60 days.
| Seller type | Amazon's description |
|---|---|
| Distributor or reseller | Buys from manufacturers or suppliers and sells to retailers, businesses or consumers |
| Manufacturer or brand owner | Designs, produces and owns the product's intellectual property |
| Brand-authorized refurbisher | Certified by the brand and follows its refurbishment requirements |
| Refurbisher | Sources, inspects, tests and cosmetically restores used products without opening the device |
| Repairer | Has processes and operations to repair used or damaged products |
| ITAD provider | Provides IT asset disposition and refurbishes used parts or products |
If you do not qualify, Amazon's answer is simple: you can still list pre-owned products that meet standard listing requirements under the Used condition. Our guide on whether you can sell used items on Amazon covers that route.
The application: invoices, images and minimums
Manufacturers and brand owners apply with trademark documentation or proof of Brand Registry. Resellers and distributors apply with paid invoices showing minimum refurbished purchases in a set period before the application. Products selling for $15.00 or less do not count toward the minimum.
| Store | Minimum refurbished purchases | Apple products |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $50,000 in the past 90 days; 180 days for Home Electronics, Tools, Lawn & Garden or Kitchen | $2,500,000 in the past 90 days |
| Canada | $50,000 in the past 90 days | $75,000 in the past 90 days |
| Mexico | $20,000 in the past 180 days | $20,000 in the past 90 days |
| EU and UK | 20,000 euros or pounds in the past 90 days | 1,000,000 for Apple phones only |
Amazon is strict about proof. Invoices must be authentic, itemized with brand and model, show a completed transaction, your full business name and address, the supplier's details and quantities; retail receipts, order confirmations, manifests and pro formas are not accepted.
You also submit at least ten real images of a sample unit from all sides, with the screen on if it has one, and its packaging, showing it meets the Excellent grade. Amazon aims to decide within 10 days.
Renewed condition grades
Renewed products are sold in one of four conditions. Amazon's customer help page describes them, and its program policies explain how each appears in your inventory. Good and Acceptable are only for the Wireless and PC categories in select stores; Premium is in select stores too.
| Grade | What customers are told | In your inventory |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | The highest Renewed condition; battery above 90% of original | Unique Renewed ASIN, shown as new condition in the US, Canada, Mexico |
| Excellent | No visible cosmetic damage at 12 inches; battery above 80% | New condition, shown as Renewed, Excellent |
| Good | Light scratches, barely visible at 12 inches | Used, Good, shown as Renewed, Good |
| Acceptable | Light scratches clearly visible, up to three minor dents | Used, Acceptable, shown as Renewed, Acceptable |
All grades must be fully functional. Accessories can be generic but must be compatible and working, and packaging can be original or a new, clean box. Amazon notes refurbished phones are not guaranteed to keep their waterproof seal.
The Renewed pricing rule
Amazon's policy says customers expect Renewed products to cost less than new ones, so Renewed products must be priced at least 5% below both the current new condition price for the same product and the price of the next higher Renewed condition. A Good offer, for example, must be at least 5% below Excellent.
Offers that break the rule can lose Featured Offer eligibility, be removed from the Renewed catalog, and in the end lose selling privileges for those ASINs, after one or more warnings. Amazon's optional Renewed repricing rule, in Automate Pricing, adjusts your prices automatically when the new version's price moves.
Listing Renewed products
- Once approved, open the Certified Refurbished ASIN Creation tool in Seller Central.
- Create or match the Renewed listing, following Amazon's detail page and image rules.
- Add "(Renewed)" at the end of the product title.
- Use the real brand; use your seller name as the brand only for private label products.
- Leave warranties out of the title, description and bullet points.
- Price at least 5% below new and the next higher grade, or set a Renewed pricing rule.
Amazon's example title is "Nikon Coolpix S7000 Wi-Fi Digital Camera (Renewed)". Renewed sellers can use FBA, Multi-Channel Fulfillment and Global Selling like other sellers; our guide to how Amazon FBA works covers fulfillment.
The Amazon Renewed Guarantee
Every Renewed product is covered by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee, and Amazon's policy is explicit that the seller is responsible for any claims under it. For customers, Amazon's help page says most Renewed items have a 90 day return period, while Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive items have 365 days. Select items also come with a free 11 month limited warranty serviced by Asurion after a 30 day return period.
| Item type | Return period | Extra coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Most Renewed items | 90 days | None |
| Renewed Premium | 365 days | None stated |
| Renewed Automotive | 365 days | None stated |
| Select Renewed items | 30 days | 11 month limited warranty serviced by Asurion |
For sellers, long return windows mean quality has to hold for months, not days. A product that fails at day 80 still comes back under the guarantee, which is why the inspection and testing standard matters as much as the price.
Keeping Renewed selling privileges
Approval is not permanent. Amazon says it frequently assesses product quality through test buys and customer feedback, and you monitor performance on the Renewed Seller Dashboard. Test buy units come back through the normal returns process and do not affect your metrics.
Falling short of the quality requirements can lead to deactivation of Renewed selling privileges, and Amazon may ask for a plan of action to reinstate them. Keep the order defect rate at 0.8% or less, the pricing rule met, and returns reasons under review.
Keep doing
- Inspect, repair, clean and test every unit to manufacturer specifications
- Check the Renewed Seller Dashboard regularly
- Keep order defect rate at 0.8% or less
- Price 5% or more below new and the next grade
- Read return reasons for patterns
Avoid
- Mentioning warranties in listings
- Grading generously; test buys check it
- Letting prices drift above the rule when new prices fall
- Staged or copied product images
- Listing products outside the permitted list without approval
Is the Amazon Renewed program worth it?
| Worth it when | Harder when |
|---|---|
| You already refurbish at volume and can show the invoices | You are starting out; the $50,000 minimum is high |
| Your quality process is documented and consistent | Grading is subjective and inconsistent across staff |
| You can carry 90 day and 365 day return risk | Margins cannot absorb returns and guarantee claims |
| Your products are on the permitted list | Your products need extra brand approvals you lack |
