KDP meaning: Kindle Direct Publishing, and how authors get paid
KDP meaning, in short: KDP stands for Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon's free platform for self-publishing ebooks, paperbacks and hardcovers. This guide explains what KDP does, how publishing works, how royalties are calculated, what KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited add, and what KDP means for authors and sellers.

KDP meaning: what the letters stand for
KDP stands for Kindle Direct Publishing. It is Amazon's self-publishing platform: a free set of tools that lets authors publish ebooks, paperbacks and hardcovers and sell them in Amazon stores worldwide, without a traditional publisher. Amazon says KDP lets you publish in more than 10 countries and over 45 languages.
"Kindle" is Amazon's ebook reader and store, "direct" means authors publish themselves rather than through a publishing house, and "publishing" covers both digital and print. Despite the name, KDP is not only for Kindle ebooks: KDP prints paperbacks and hardcovers on demand and ships them to customers.
Amazon's KDP home page lists the promise in three parts: control over content, design, price, audience and advertising; ownership of your content; and a book appearing in Amazon stores around the world in 72 hours.

How Kindle Direct Publishing works
- Create a KDP account and complete your tax and payment details.
- Prepare the manuscript and check it with Kindle Previewer.
- Upload the manuscript: Word, PDF, plain text, MobiPocket or ePub for ebooks.
- Add the book's details, keywords, categories and a cover.
- Choose rights, a royalty option and a list price.
- Select Save and Publish; after Amazon's review, the book goes on sale.
These steps follow Amazon's own guide to selling without inventory. Paperback and hardcover books need an ISBN, and KDP offers a free one for print formats; each format needs its own ISBN. Our guide on how to make money on Amazon compares KDP with Amazon's other routes.
KDP eBook royalties: 35% or 70%
KDP's eBook royalty page says you choose between two options for each eBook. At 35%, your royalty is 35% of the list price without VAT. At 70%, it is 70% of the list price without VAT, minus delivery costs, which average $0.06 per unit and vary with file size, for sales to customers in the 70% territories; sales elsewhere earn 35%.
Two conditions decide whether 70% is available. The book must be in copyright: works that are mainly public domain only qualify for 35%. And the list price must sit in the 70% band, which KDP's pricing page says is $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com from July 7, 2026, up from $2.99 to $9.99.
| 35% option | 70% option | |
|---|---|---|
| Royalty | 35% of list price without VAT | 70% of list price without VAT, minus delivery costs |
| Delivery costs | None | About $0.06 per unit on average, by file size |
| List price on Amazon.com | Wider range | $2.99 to $12.99 from July 7, 2026 |
| Public domain works | Eligible | Not eligible unless substantially original |
| Where it applies | All sales | Customers in the 70% territories; 35% elsewhere |
KDP paperback and hardcover royalties
For print, KDP says you earn a royalty each time a new copy is manufactured to fill an order. The rate is 50% or 60% of the list price, depending on the price and marketplace, and KDP then subtracts the printing cost, which depends on page count, ink type and the marketplace. The formula KDP gives is: royalty rate times list price, minus printing costs.
Expanded Distribution, which offers print books to other retailers and libraries, pays 40% of the list price minus printing costs. KDP sets a minimum list price so the royalty always covers the printing cost, and a promotion that discounts the price to the customer does not reduce your royalty.

- 50% or 60%By list price and marketplace

KDP's help page notes that trim size, bleed and cover finish do not change printing cost; page count and ink type do. A color interior on a long book can leave little royalty at a low price, which is why KDP's calculator is worth running before setting the price.
KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited
KDP Select is a free 90 day program for Kindle eBooks. Enrolling an eBook automatically includes it in Kindle Unlimited, Amazon's reading subscription, and makes it eligible for Free Book Promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals. Read the program's terms before enrolling, since they set where else the eBook can be offered during the enrollment.
Kindle Unlimited pays differently from sales. KDP's help page says authors share a monthly KDP Select Global Fund based on pages read for the first time, measured in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages, with credit capped at 3,000 pages per title per customer. KDP's home page reported total KU author earnings of $69.4 million for August.
| Author | Pages read | Share of an example $10 million fund with 100 million pages read |
|---|---|---|
| 100 page book, read fully 100 times | 10,000 | $1,000 |
| 200 page book, read fully 100 times | 20,000 | $2,000 |
| 200 page book, read halfway 100 times | 10,000 | $1,000 |
KDP forbids rewarding readers for reading: no payments, gifts, contest entries or bonus content in exchange for Kindle Unlimited reads. Pages are paid only the first time a customer reads them.
KDP compared with traditional publishing
| Kindle Direct Publishing | Traditional publishing | |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides to publish | The author | The publisher |
| Cost to publish | Free | Paid by the publisher |
| Time to market | About 72 hours after publishing, per Amazon | Usually much longer |
| Ownership and control | Author keeps rights and sets the price | Contract terms decide |
| Royalties | Up to 70% on eBooks, up to 60% on print, per KDP | Set by contract |
| Editing, design, marketing | The author's job, or paid help | Usually the publisher's |
The trade is responsibility for rights and royalties. With KDP, editing, the cover and marketing are yours, and a self-published book sells only if readers can find it, which is where keywords, categories and Amazon Ads come in.
Getting a KDP book found
Publishing puts the book in the store; readers still have to find it. KDP's own tools cover the basics: keywords and categories in the book's details, a clear cover, and a description that reads well. KDP Select adds Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotions, and Amazon Ads lets authors advertise books in search results.
Keywords and categories
The book's details decide which searches it appears in.
Cover
Amazon's guide stresses a clear, eye-catching cover that reads at small sizes.
KDP Select promotions
Free Book Promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals.
Amazon Ads
Sponsored ads for books, from the KDP dashboard.
Series and formats
eBook, paperback and hardcover of the same book reach different readers.
Reviews
Early honest reviews build trust; incentivized reading is not allowed.
The ranking side works like any Amazon product: sales rank reflects sales relative to other books, and for books, KDP says ranks update at least daily. Our guide to what BSR on Amazon means covers book ranks too, and our guide to Amazon PPC covers ads.
Other meanings of KDP
In an Amazon context, KDP almost always means Kindle Direct Publishing. The same letters stand for other things elsewhere, so if you met the term outside books and Amazon, it may mean something else. On Amazon seller forums, in publishing and in Amazon's own help pages, it is Kindle Direct Publishing.
Related Amazon terms often appear next to it. KDP Select is the optional eBook program; KU is Kindle Unlimited; KENP is Kindle Edition Normalized Pages, the unit KU pays on; and ACX is Amazon's audiobook production marketplace for Audible.
| Term | Meaning |

| KDP | Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon's self-publishing platform |

What KDP means for Amazon sellers
For product sellers, KDP is a separate business from Seller Central: a different account, different fees, royalties instead of referral fees, and printing handled by Amazon. It suits sellers who already have expertise to share, such as a guide to the products they sell, and authors who want an inventory-free route onto Amazon.
Books you did not write are a different matter: reselling physical books happens through a normal seller account, under Amazon's book condition guidelines. Our guide on whether you can sell used items on Amazon covers those rules.
| KDP | Seller Central | |
|---|---|---|
| What you sell | Books you publish | Physical products, including resold books |
| How you earn | Royalties | Sale price minus fees |
| Inventory | None; printed on demand | Yours, in FBA or your own space |
| Account | KDP account | Selling account and plan |
Common KDP mistakes

Outside $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com, eBooks earn 35%.

Mainly public domain works only qualify for 35%.
Ignoring printing cost

Reusing an ISBN
Each print format and major edition needs its own ISBN.
Paying for reads
KDP forbids incentivizing Kindle Unlimited reading.
No marketing plan
Publishing is free; being found takes keywords, promotions or ads.
If you publish books alongside selling products and want both run as one plan, our Amazon consulting service can help with listings and ads for both.
