What is BSR on Amazon? Best Sellers Rank, how Amazon calculates it, and what it cannot tell you
What is BSR on Amazon? It is Best Sellers Rank, a number on the product detail page that shows how well a product sells compared with others in the same category. This guide explains how Amazon calculates it, how to read it, and how sellers use it, using Amazon's own help pages.
Key takeaways
- BSR, or Best Sellers Rank, shows a product's sales rank against similar products in the same category. Lower is better: #1 is the top seller.
- Amazon calculates it from sales: all-time sales count, but recent sales count more. Page views and customer reviews do not affect it.
- A product can have several BSRs, one per featured category, and different ranks in different Amazon stores.
- Ranks are relative. Your BSR can fall while your sales rise, if other products in the category grew faster.
- BSR does not drive sales. It reflects them, which makes it useful for product research and for tracking trends.
What is BSR on Amazon? The short answer
BSR stands for Best Sellers Rank. Amazon's seller blog describes it as a metric on product detail pages that indicates a product's sales rank compared with similar products in the Amazon store. It is also what the Amazon Best Sellers lists are built from: the top selling products in each featured category, ranked by BSR and updated frequently.
The number reads like a race position. Amazon's own example: if a satin sheet set ranks #4 in the Home & Kitchen category, it is the fourth best selling product among active Home & Kitchen listings. The lower the number, the higher the sales rank, so a BSR of 50 means stronger sales than a BSR of 5,000 in the same category.
Two words in that definition matter most: "similar" and "category". A BSR compares a product only with others in the same category. It is not a score across all of Amazon, and it is not a measure of quality.

Where to find BSR in Amazon listings
Amazon says you can often find a product's BSR on its product detail page, in the Product information section, which sits below the main listing on most product types. It usually shows as a line such as "Best Sellers Rank: #1,234 in Kitchen & Dining", followed by one or more narrower category ranks.
Not every listing shows one. Amazon's Sales Rank FAQ says sales ranks are displayed for an ASIN that has a sale record and has been assigned to featured categories, and that ranks are not generated for all categories. The Amazon Best Sellers lists show the same ranking the other way round: category by category, from #1 down.
How Amazon calculates Best Sellers Rank
Amazon calculates Best Sellers Rank from sales volume. Its Sales Rank FAQ says sales rank is based on all-time sales of an ASIN, with recent sales weighted more than older sales. The customer help page says the same in shopper terms: the calculation is based on Amazon sales and updated frequently to reflect recent and historical sales of every item sold on Amazon.
Timing matters when you watch a rank. Amazon says it updates the Best Sellers lists every hour, but it can take up to 12 hours for an order to show in the sales rank. For books, the KDP help page says rankings are updated at least once a day and changes can take up to 2 days to appear.
| Factor | Counts toward BSR? | What Amazon says |
|---|---|---|
| Recent sales | Yes, most | Recent sales are weighted more than older sales |
| Historical sales | Yes | All-time sales factor in |
| Sales of other products in the category | Yes, indirectly | Ranks are relative to the category |
| Page views | No | BSRs are not influenced by page views |
| Customer reviews and ratings | No | Reviews are not taken into consideration |
| Price, ads, keywords | Only through sales | They change BSR only if they change sales |
Amazon does not publish the formula, the weights, or how many days count as recent. Any tool that claims to know the exact calculation is estimating. What Amazon does publish is enough to use BSR well: it is a sales measure, weighted to the recent past, and relative to the category.
Why BSR is relative, and why it can fall while sales rise
Amazon's FAQ answers a question many sellers ask: why did my sales rank get worse after a lot of sales? Because sales ranks are relative. Other products in the same category may have increased their sales too, and the rank also weighs historical sales, so a short burst may not move it as much as expected.
The KDP help page explains the same effect from the other side. Your rank can improve even when your sales stay the same, if other products sell less, and it can drop if they sell more. It adds that one sale of a very popular book may barely move its rank, while one sale of a lower volume book can improve its rank a lot.
Multiple BSRs: categories, stores and variations
| Situation | What happens to BSR | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Product in more than one category | One BSR per featured category, and they can differ | Seller blog: a tumbler #1 in Tumblers & Water Glasses, #2 in Kitchen & Dining |
| Different Amazon stores | Separate ranks per store | Seller blog: #1 in the US might be #23 in the UK or Japan |
| Variations in some stores | Child sales added to the parent; parent and children share one rank | Sales Rank FAQ |
| Variations in other stores | Each child ASIN ranked separately | Sales Rank FAQ |
| Books in several formats | Each format has its own rank; Books category ranks combine formats | KDP Sales Ranking help |
The practical rule for variations comes from Amazon's FAQ: make sure the parent and child ASINs are in the same website display group and that the parent has the right browse categories. The seller blog adds that the parent ASIN and all child ASINs should be assigned to the same category. Our catalog management service fixes category and variation setups that split or hide a rank.
BSR and organic search ranking are different things
BSR shows a product's rank within a category. Organic search ranking decides where a product appears when a shopper types a phrase into Amazon search. Amazon's seller blog is clear that the two are separate: a top BSR does not always mean a high organic search ranking, and a high organic ranking does not guarantee a high BSR.
They are connected through sales. Amazon says both rankings relate to sales volume, so an item that sells well has a better chance of ranking higher both in organic search and on the Best Sellers lists. Improving search visibility is the job of Amazon SEO, covered in our Amazon SEO guide.
| Best Sellers Rank | Organic search ranking | |
|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | How well does this sell in its category? | Where does this appear for a search phrase? |
| Where you see it | Product information section, Best Sellers lists | Search results pages |
| Driven by | Sales volume, recent weighted more | Relevance to the query and sales performance |
| You influence it by | Selling more | Keywords, listing quality, and selling more |
What is a good BSR on Amazon?
There is no single good number, and Amazon publishes none. A good BSR depends on the category: a rank that means strong sales in a narrow subcategory can mean modest sales in a large department, because the large department has far more products and far more total sales to rank against.
A better question is what a rank means for your decision. For product research, compare the BSRs of the products on page one of a search, all in the same category. For your own product, compare your BSR with itself over weeks, and with the products you actually compete with.
| Comparison | Useful? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two products in the same subcategory | Yes | Same pool of products and sales |
| Your product this month against last month | Yes, as a trend | Shows direction, allowing for the category's own changes |
| Products in different categories | No | Different sizes of category make the numbers incomparable |
| Your rank in the US against the UK | No | Each store ranks separately |
| One hourly reading | Weakly | A single sale can move a low volume product a long way |
For deciding what to sell, our guides to the best products on Amazon and wholesale products to sell on Amazon use BSR as one input among several, never alone.
From BSR to estimated sales
Amazon does not convert BSR into a sales number. Third party estimators do, and Amazon's own seller blog describes several. You enter a product's category, BSR and Amazon store, and the tool returns an estimate of average monthly sales. Amazon's example: a dog chew toy with a BSR of #516 in Pet Supplies in the US store, which one estimator put at 11,640 estimated sales per month.
Treat those figures as estimates, because that is what they are. Amazon's blog points to two sources of real numbers: the rough range many listings now show, such as "200+ bought in the past month", and, for your own products, the Sales Dashboard under Reports, then Business Reports, in Seller Central.
| Source | What it gives | How reliable |
|---|---|---|
| Third party BSR estimators | Estimated monthly sales from category and BSR | An estimate; tools can disagree |
| "Bought in the past month" on the listing | A rough range of recent orders | Amazon's own figure, but a range |
| Product Opportunity Explorer | Niche level search volume and units sold | Amazon's data, for niches |
| Business Reports in Seller Central | Your own sales, sessions and conversion | Exact, for your products only |
For niche level data rather than single products, our guide to Amazon Product Opportunity Explorer shows what Amazon itself reports on demand and units sold.
How to improve your Amazon BSR
Because BSR follows sales, the only way to improve it is to sell more, relative to the category. Amazon's seller blog names five ways to do that. None of them touch the rank directly; each one works through sales.
- Choose the most specific, accurate category, using the Best Sellers lists to see the options, and keep parent and child ASINs in the same one.
- Optimize listings to rank in search: titles, images, descriptions and bullet points, with A/B tests in Manage Your Experiments.
- Set competitive prices, or use the Automate Pricing tool to adjust them around the clock.
- Use advertising and marketing, such as cost-per-click ads, social media, affiliate marketing and product bundles.
- Focus on customer engagement: answer questions, follow up after purchases, and earn good reviews and repeat buyers.
Step one has the most leverage for the least effort, because a product in the wrong or too broad category competes against products shoppers do not compare it with. For the other steps, see our guides to ranking for keywords on Amazon and Amazon PPC.
Using BSR for product research and tracking
Amazon's blog says BSR does not drive sales directly, but reviewing BSR scores is a good way to get product ideas and track sales trends. It suggests three uses: product research through the Best Sellers and Movers & Shakers lists, tracking key performance indicators alongside BSR, and reading deeper customer data in Brand Analytics.
Product research
Browse Best Sellers and Movers & Shakers, which shows the biggest gainers in sales rank over 24 hours, then read reviews of high ranking products for gaps you could fill.
Tracking a trend
Watch the rank of a product, yours or a competitor's, over weeks. Direction matters more than any single reading.
Alongside other metrics
Read BSR next to sales, sessions and conversion in Business Reports, so a rank change has a cause.
Brand Analytics
For brands in Brand Registry on the Professional plan, search and customer data that explains what the rank cannot.
Our guide to Amazon marketplace analytics covers how to read those reports together, and our guide on how to increase sales on Amazon covers what to change once they point somewhere.
The Best Seller badge and how it relates to BSR
The orange Best Seller badge is awarded from BSR. Amazon's Sales Rank FAQ says best seller badges go to ASINs that rank #1 in a featured category with at least 100 products, and that there are also ordering thresholds, which differ by store. It adds that badges are not shown in stores where child ASIN orders are assigned to the parent.
A related badge covers new products. Amazon says new release badges go to ASINs that are the #1 best seller among new releases in a category, with the definition of new varying by category, so accurate release and launch dates matter.
- Best Seller
- #1 in a featured categoryWith at least 100 products, plus ordering thresholds
- New release
- #1 among new releasesIn a category; new is defined per category
- Not shown
- Some variation setupsWhere child orders count toward the parent
BSR missing or not updating: what to check
| Symptom | Likely reason, per Amazon's FAQ | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No BSR on the listing | No sale record yet, or not assigned to a featured category | Wait for sales; check the browse category |
| New order not reflected | It can take up to 12 hours for an order to show | Check again later |
| Rank still missing after sales | Filtering rules during rank generation, or category assignment | Ask Selling Partner Support about featured categories |
| Rank worse despite more sales | Ranks are relative; others grew too | Compare against competitors, not your past rank alone |
| Children ranked differently from parent | Variations handled by website display group | Put parent and children in the same display group and category |
| Lower rated product ranks higher | Reviews are not part of sales rank | Nothing to fix; it is a sales measure |
Common mistakes when reading BSR
Comparing across categories
A rank means different sales in different categories. Compare like with like.
Treating BSR as quality
Amazon says a sales rank does not indicate product quality or what customers think.
Reading one snapshot
Hourly lists move with single sales on low volume products. Watch the trend.
Trusting estimates as facts
BSR to sales conversions come from third party models, not Amazon.
Chasing the rank itself
BSR follows sales. Work on visibility, conversion and price instead.
Ignoring category setup
A wrong or split category can hide or weaken a rank you have earned.
If a rank looks wrong for the sales you see, our Amazon consulting service checks the category setup, variations and the listing together.
What is BSR on Amazon: FAQ
What does BSR mean on Amazon?
Best Sellers Rank. It is a metric on product detail pages that shows a product's sales rank compared with similar products in the same category. Lower numbers mean stronger sales.
How is Amazon BSR calculated?
From sales. Amazon's Sales Rank FAQ says rank is based on all-time sales of an ASIN, with recent sales weighted more than older sales. Amazon does not publish the exact formula.
How often does BSR update?
Amazon says it updates the Best Sellers lists every hour, but it can take up to 12 hours for an order to show in the sales rank. For books, KDP says at least once a day, with changes taking up to 2 days.
Do reviews affect BSR?
No. Amazon says sales rank is generated from order data and product reviews are not taken into consideration. Page views do not affect it either.
What is a good BSR on Amazon?
It depends on the category. Amazon publishes no threshold, and a rank means different sales in different categories. Compare BSRs only within the same category and store.
Why does my product have more than one BSR?
Because it sits in more than one featured category, and each category has its own rank. It can also have different ranks in different Amazon stores.
Why did my BSR drop when my sales went up?
Ranks are relative. Other products in the category may have grown faster, and the rank also weighs historical sales, so it may not move as much as a short burst suggests.
Why does my listing have no BSR?
Amazon says ranks show for ASINs with a sale record that are assigned to featured categories. New orders can take up to 12 hours to count, and filtering rules can also hide a rank.
Is BSR the same as search ranking?
No. BSR is a category sales rank; search ranking is where a product appears for a search phrase. Both relate to sales, but a top BSR does not guarantee a top search position.
Can I estimate sales from BSR?
Third party estimators do, from the category, the BSR and the store, but the results are estimates. Amazon's own figures are the "bought in the past month" range on listings and your Business Reports.
How do I get the Best Seller badge?
Amazon awards it to ASINs ranked #1 in a featured category with at least 100 products, subject to ordering thresholds that vary by store.
How can I improve my BSR?
By selling more relative to your category: choose an accurate, specific category, optimize the listing for search, price competitively, advertise, and earn repeat customers.
