How to increase sales on Amazon: find the weak link first, then pull the right lever

Knowing how to increase sales on Amazon starts with knowing where sales are lost: too few shoppers find the product, too few of them buy, or they buy from someone else. This guide shows how to find the weak link, then works through twelve levers Amazon itself recommends.

  • Sales come from three things: shoppers reaching the listing, shoppers converting, and your offer winning the sale. Fix the weakest first.
  • Amazon names price, availability and shipping options among the factors behind the Featured Offer, the offer beside Buy Now.
  • Amazon says products see an average of 50% more weekly ordered units within the first year of launching Sponsored Products, as its own average.
  • Coupons show a badge in search results; Prime Exclusive Discounts, Lightning Deals and promo codes reach different shoppers.
  • Staying in stock is a sales lever in itself: an out of stock product loses its ads and its sales at once.

How to increase sales on Amazon: find the weak link first

Sales on Amazon are the product of three things. Shoppers have to reach the listing, through search, ads or other traffic. Enough of them have to buy once they arrive. And when several sellers offer the same product, your offer has to be the one they buy, the Featured Offer beside the Buy Now button.

A list of tactics does not say which of the three is failing. Pulling the wrong lever wastes money: more ad traffic to a page that does not convert only buys more visits that leave. The first step in how to increase sales on Amazon is to find which part of the chain is weak.

Where Amazon sales are lost, in order: shoppers must find the listing, click it, buy from the page, and buy your offer rather than another seller's, and the product must be in stock throughout. 01 Found search, ads, traffic impressions 02 Clicked image, title, price click through rate 03 Bought page, reviews, delivery conversion rate 04 Your offer Featured Offer price, stock, shipping

Lever 1: listings that rank and convert

Amazon's own list of tactics starts with the listing. Its seller blog advises treating descriptions as short buying guides, covering who the product is for, what problem it solves and its key benefits, and writing original text rather than copying manufacturer content, which it says can hurt ranking in search results.

For keywords, the blog recommends buying intent phrases: specific searches customers use when ready to buy, such as a size and material, rather than broad terms. It adds that AI powered search tools use listing content to recommend products, so listings should organize information clearly and answer customer questions directly.

One number needs care. Amazon's blog quotes a 200 character title limit and recommends 80 or fewer, while Seller Central's title requirements cap titles for new listings at 75 characters. Follow the requirement page.

The rest of the product listing carries the conversion: product images that answer questions, bullet points with one benefit each, and product descriptions written for the buyer. Keyword research decides the search terms each field holds. Our listing optimization guide works through every field.

Lever 2: win the Featured Offer

When several sellers offer one product, the detail page shows one offer beside the Buy Now button: Amazon calls it the Featured Offer. Amazon's blog says price, availability, shipping options and other factors play into winning it, and that doing so can lead to dramatic increases in sales. It does not publish the full formula.

Seller Central's Increase sales page gives the practical check: the Manage Inventory page shows the lowest price and the Featured Offer price for each product you sell. If your offer is priced well above the Featured Offer, or ships slower, buyers are likely to buy the other offer. Sellers often call this position the Buy Box.

Lever 3: advertising

Advertising is the fastest way to add traffic, and Amazon's blog gives its own average: products see an average of 50% more weekly ordered units within the first year of launching a Sponsored Products campaign. That is Amazon's figure across its advertisers, not a promise for one product, and it assumes the listing converts.

The blog names three ad types. Sponsored Products are cost per click ads for individual listings in search results and on product pages. Sponsored Brands, for Brand Registry sellers, add a logo, headline, several products and video. Display ads reach customers on Amazon and on other websites and apps, using contextual signals rather than keywords.

Traffic from outside Amazon counts too. Amazon's blog says brands can run their own marketing and earn a Brand Referral Bonus, 10% of the sales price on average, for directing traffic to Amazon listings, measured through Amazon Attribution. Our Amazon PPC guide covers the ads themselves.

Lever 4: coupons, deals and promotions

Seller Central's Increase sales page says buyers look at the whole range of promotions, from money off to free shipping, and gives Amazon's own example: free shipping on eligible orders of $35 or more had such an impact that Amazon made it a regular feature. Promotions give shoppers a reason to choose now.

CouponsDollar or percent off, with a coupon badge in search results and on the coupons pageWinning the click on the results page
Prime Exclusive DiscountA price discount for Prime members, shown along the shopping pathReaching Prime shoppers
Lightning Deals and dealsTime limited offersEvents and bursts of sales
Social Media Promo CodesShareable percent off links for social channels and influencersBringing outside audiences to Amazon

Promotions cost margin, so pair each one with a goal and an end date. A coupon on a product that already wins the Featured Offer and converts well can simply give away profit; on a product that loses clicks on the results page, the badge can be the difference.

Lever 5: reviews, the legitimate way

Reviews build the trust that turns a visit into an order. Amazon's blog points to Amazon Vine, which gives free units to invited reviewers to build authentic reviews, especially for new products. Vine can bring up to 30 reviews per product, with costs set per parent product.

Everything else has to come from real customers. Amazon's reviews policy bans any payment, discount, free product or refund in exchange for a review, and says violations can end a selling account. The dependable path is a product and a listing that match what buyers expect. Our guide on how to get Amazon reviews covers the rules in full.

Levers 6 and 7: fast delivery and staying in stock

Amazon's blog notes that customers can sort search results by delivery speed, so faster and cheaper shipping helps a listing stand out. Fulfillment by Amazon makes products eligible for free two day shipping through Prime, and Amazon packs, ships and handles customer service and returns.

Stock is its own lever. A product that runs out loses its sales, its Sponsored Products ads and its Featured Offer at once. Amazon's FBA Restock tool gives replenishment recommendations based on sales history, demand forecast, seasonality and your replenishment settings. For sellers on several channels, Amazon advises synchronizing inventory to avoid stockouts.

Measuring whether sales really increased

Change one lever at a time where you can, and compare equal periods before and after. Amazon says listing changes can take up to 72 hours to show, and title changes 24 to 48 hours. Seasonality moves sales on its own, so compare with the same weeks of the previous year when you have them.

How to increase sales on Amazon: FAQ

The audit tier of the crest: a steel shelf with kraft parcels being scanned along its lanes
  • How can I increase my sales on Amazon quickly?

Find the weak link first. If few shoppers see the product, add Sponsored Products; if they see it but do not click, fix the main image, title, price or add a coupon; if they visit but do not buy, improve the page and reviews.

  • Why are my Amazon sales low?

Usually one of three reasons: shoppers do not find the listing, they find it but do not buy, or they buy from another seller's offer. Stockouts are a fourth. Check impressions, conversion and the Featured Offer in that order.

  • Does advertising increase Amazon sales?

Amazon says products see an average of 50% more weekly ordered units within the first year of launching Sponsored Products, as an average across its advertisers. The effect depends on the listing converting the traffic.

  • What is the Featured Offer?

The offer shown beside the Buy Now button on a product page shared by several sellers. Amazon says price, availability, shipping options and other factors play into which offer is featured.

  • Do coupons increase sales on Amazon?

They can, especially where shoppers compare on the results page: Amazon shows a coupon badge in search results and on its coupons page. They also cost margin, so give each coupon a goal and an end date.

  • How do reviews affect Amazon sales?

Reviews build trust that helps visits become orders. Amazon Vine can bring early reviews for new products; any paid or incentivized review breaks Amazon's policy.

  • Does FBA increase sales?

Amazon says FBA makes products eligible for free two day Prime shipping, and customers can sort results by delivery speed, which can help a listing stand out.

  • How does stock affect sales on Amazon?

An out of stock product loses its sales, its Sponsored Products ads and the Featured Offer at once. Amazon's FBA Restock tool recommends reorders from sales history, forecast and seasonality.

  • What is the Brand Referral Bonus?

A bonus Amazon pays brands in Brand Registry for traffic they drive to Amazon listings from outside, measured with Amazon Attribution; Amazon's blog puts it at 10% of the sales price on average.

  • How long before changes increase sales?

Listing changes can take up to 72 hours to show, and ad tests need about two weeks of data. Measure against equal periods and account for seasonality.
