Amazon side hustles: what fits around a day job, and what quietly doesn't

Amazon side hustles range from delivering packages on your own schedule to publishing books and designing t-shirts. They differ in what they ask of your evenings: some pay for hours worked, some pay later for work done once, and some need money up front. This guide compares the part-time options Amazon offers, from its own pages, without income promises.

  • Amazon Flex pays for hours you choose; Amazon says most drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour, with earnings varying by location and other factors.
  • Merch on Demand, KDP and Amazon Associates cost little to start and pay per sale, but take months of work before income builds.
  • Selling products part time works best with FBA, which ships orders and handles returns while you are at your job.
  • Amazon Mechanical Turk, still on many side hustle lists, was set to close permanently on September 30, 2026, per its worker site.
  • Amazon Vine reviewers are not paid, and paying for reviews breaks Amazon's rules; neither is a side hustle.

What makes a good Amazon side hustle

A side hustle has to fit around something else, usually a full time job. That changes what matters. The best Amazon side hustles let you choose your hours, cost little to try, and keep working while you are busy elsewhere. Income potential matters too, but a route that needs you at noon on a Tuesday will not last, however well it pays.

Amazon's options fall into three groups. Some pay for time, like Amazon Flex. Some pay per sale for work done once, like designs, books and affiliate content. And some are small businesses run part time, like reselling or selling your own products with FBA. Our guide to how to make money on Amazon covers every route in full; this one filters for part time.

The Flex earnings figure is Amazon's: most drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour, and actual earnings vary by location, tips, delivery time and other factors. The other routes have no hourly figure, because income depends on sales. Treat any headline income on side hustle lists as marketing unless it links to a source.

Amazon Flex: paid for the hours you choose

Amazon Flex is the most direct Amazon side hustle: you deliver Amazon packages with your own vehicle through the Flex app.

Amazon says you choose delivery blocks up to a week in advance, see how long a block runs and what it pays before you start, and deliver only when you want to. To start, you need to be 21 or older with a valid license, a qualifying vehicle and a smartphone.

Flex suits people who want predictable money for predictable hours and have a car. It does not build anything: income stops when the hours stop, and vehicle costs come out of what you earn. Availability depends on where you live, and Amazon's site lists where Flex operates.

Creative side hustles: Merch, KDP and ACX

Three Amazon programs pay you for creative work, per sale. With Merch on Demand, you upload designs and Amazon prints them on products, sells them and ships them, and pays a royalty per product sold; Amazon says there are no upfront costs.

With Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon's free self-publishing platform, often called KDP, you publish eBooks and paperbacks and earn royalties; from July 7, 2026 the 70% eBook royalty applies to prices from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com. ACX connects authors with narrators and producers for audiobooks.

These are the classic evening side hustles: the work happens when you have time, and each design or book can keep selling. The catch is volume. One design or one book rarely earns much; people who make these work publish steadily for months. Our guide to what KDP means covers publishing in depth.

Affiliate marketing side hustles: Associates and Influencer

If you already write, review or post, Amazon Associates pays a commission, up to 10% depending on the category, when people buy through your links. It needs a qualifying website, app or channel, and Amazon reviews new accounts after they make three qualified sales within 180 days. The Amazon Influencer Program does something similar for creators on social platforms, with a storefront for recommended products.

Both reward an audience you build over time, so they fit people who enjoy making content anyway. Neither pays for effort, only for sales, and building an audience usually takes longer than people expect.

Affiliate marketing works best when the content helps people decide: honest reviews, comparisons and how-to posts on a topic you know. The account is free to set up, and Amazon's reporting shows which links earn, so you can see what your audience actually buys.

Selling part time: reselling, Handmade and FBA

Selling products is the side hustle with the most potential and the most risk, because it needs money up front. Reselling, retail or online arbitrage, can start small: Amazon's reselling guide says it can work if you follow Amazon's selling guidelines, though you might need documents such as invoices. Amazon Handmade suits makers, and Amazon says it waives the Professional plan fee for approved Handmade sellers.

What makes selling workable around a job is Fulfillment by Amazon. You send inventory to Amazon, and Amazon picks, packs, ships and handles customer service and returns, so orders go out while you are at work. The Individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold; the Professional plan is $39.99 a month.

Part-time selling that fits a day job

  • Start on the Individual plan while sales are few
  • Use FBA so orders ship while you work
  • Keep a small, focused product range
  • Check approval and brand rules before buying stock
  • Keep every invoice from the start

The research is the part-time seller's real work: find products with steady demand, check the competition and pricing on the listing, and make sure the numbers leave a profit for you and a fair price for customers. Amazon's own tools, such as Best Sellers lists and Product Opportunity Explorer, help set up that research without paid software.

Our guides to online arbitrage and how Amazon FBA works cover the practical side.

What a selling side hustle really costs and earns

For an Amazon seller, profit is what is left after the product cost, the selling plan, referral fees, fulfillment and advertising. On a part-time budget, profit margins are the whole game: a product that looks cheap to buy can leave nothing once Amazon FBA fulfillment fees and storage are paid. Amazon's Revenue Calculator shows the fees for a real product, and it is worth running before buying any inventory.

Each business model carries a different upfront investment. Retail arbitrage and online arbitrage start with a few purchases. Wholesale needs minimum orders. Private label, where you sell products under your own brand, needs the most: product development, inventory and a launch. Most part-time sellers start with the smallest model and move up once product ideas prove themselves with a real customer base.

Extra income from selling is real but not automatic, and it is rarely passive income: someone still sources, lists, prices and reorders. Our guides to the Amazon wholesale business and Amazon private label cover the bigger models, and our ACoS calculator helps if you advertise.
