Buy UPC codes for Amazon: the GS1 options, the costs, and the codes that fail
To buy UPC codes for Amazon, go to GS1, the organization that issues them. Amazon checks product codes against the GS1 database, so a cheap code licensed to someone else can get listings removed. This guide covers GS1's two options and their costs, how many codes you need, and when Amazon lets you list without one.
Key takeaways
- Amazon requires a GTIN, usually a UPC, to create listings in most categories, and checks product codes against the GS1 database.
- GS1 US licenses a single GTIN for a one-time $30 fee with no renewal, or a company prefix from $250 plus $50 a year for up to 10 products.
- Each product and variation needs its own GTIN: every size, color, style and package count, GS1 says.
- Private label, handmade and bundled products can apply for a GTIN exemption, but not products that already have a GTIN.
- For FBA, only brand representatives with eligible products can use the manufacturer barcode; resellers use Amazon barcodes.
UPC, GTIN and why Amazon asks for them
GS1 US explains the difference: a GTIN, or Global Trade Item Number, is the number that identifies a product, and the UPC is the barcode that carries it so a scanner can read it. In the US, the UPC holds a 12-digit GTIN. Amazon and most sellers use the words interchangeably, and Amazon's help calls the requirement a product ID or GTIN.
Amazon says that for most categories you must provide a unique product identifier, a GTIN, to create a new listing; the most common are UPC, EAN, JAN and ISBN. The code ties your product to your brand in the Amazon catalog, keeps two different products from sharing one page, and lets Amazon match offers from different sellers to the same product.

Where to buy UPC codes for Amazon
Buy UPC codes for Amazon from GS1 US, or from the GS1 organization in your country. GS1 US quotes Amazon's Seller Central directly: Amazon verifies the authenticity of product UPCs by checking the GS1 database, UPCs that do not match the information provided by GS1 are considered invalid, and sellers should obtain UPCs directly from GS1.
That check is why cheap codes from resellers are a risk. A number sold on the secondary market is often registered in the GS1 database to the company that first licensed it, not to your brand. When Amazon compares the code with your brand name, they do not match. GS1 US warns that a mismatch can mean a suspended account or relabeled products.
Codes that pass Amazon's check
- A single GTIN licensed from GS1 US in your company's name
- GTINs created from your own GS1 Company Prefix
- The manufacturer's GTIN on a product you resell
- An approved GTIN exemption instead of a code, where eligible
If you resell another brand's product, you do not buy a UPC at all: you match your offer to the existing listing with the manufacturer's code. Buying codes is for your own products. Our guide to Amazon private label covers that route.
What GS1 charges: single GTIN or company prefix
GS1 US offers two ways to get codes. A single GS1 US GTIN costs a one-time $30 per number with no annual renewal; GS1 generates the number and issues a certificate. A GS1 Company Prefix is a block of numbers you assign yourself, priced by capacity with an initial fee and an annual renewal.
| GS1 US option | Products covered | Initial fee | Annual renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single GTIN | 1 per purchase | $30 each | None |
| Company Prefix | Up to 10 | $250 | $50 |
| Company Prefix | Up to 100 | $750 | $150 |
| Company Prefix | Up to 1,000 | $2,500 | $500 |
| Company Prefix | Up to 10,000 | $6,500 | $1,300 |
| Company Prefix | Up to 100,000 | $10,500 | $2,100 |
GS1 US says prices can change and prefix payments are non-refundable. A single GTIN cannot be used on regulated healthcare products or for coupons, and companies in regulated industries such as healthcare or food may need a prefix. With either option you get GS1 US Data Hub, where you assign numbers and download barcode images.
How many UPC codes you need
GS1 US says a new GTIN is needed for each product and each variation, such as size, color, style or package count, and for higher levels of packaging such as cases and inner packs. Amazon's category rules add bundles: in several categories, product bundles require their own unique UPC.
GS1's own example makes the math clear: one style made in four colors and four sizes needs 16 GTINs. Sixteen single GTINs cost $480 once. A 100-number prefix costs $750 plus $150 a year, but leaves room for 84 more products, and GS1 suggests planning for the variations you expect to launch in the next one to two years.
| Your catalog | Codes needed | Usually cheaper |
|---|---|---|
| 1 product, no variations | 1 | Single GTIN, $30 |
| 3 products, 2 sizes each | 6 | Single GTINs, $180 |
| 1 style, 4 colors x 4 sizes | 16 | Single GTINs at first; a prefix if you plan more |
| A growing line of 30+ items | 30 or more | A 100-number prefix |
| Cases or multi-packs sold separately | One extra per pack level | Depends on the total |
How to buy UPC codes and list on Amazon
- Count every product and variation you will sell, plus pack sizes sold separately.
- Buy single GTINs or a company prefix from GS1 US, in the same company and brand name you use on Amazon.
- Assign a number to each product in GS1 US Data Hub, with the brand name and product description.
- Download the barcode images and print them on packaging, or on labels.
- Create the Amazon listing and enter the UPC as the product ID.
Amazon's help includes a sign-in tool for sellers who have a product ID but cannot add the product. Our guide to product listing on Amazon covers the listing itself.
Listing without a UPC: GTIN exemptions
Some products can be listed without a code. Amazon says you can apply for a GTIN exemption for private label or handmade products, products you make, brand or publish without barcodes, parts without a product ID, bundles, and generic unbranded products. Exemptions are granted at the product type level and cover child product types.
You cannot apply if the product already has a GS1 barcode or any GTIN, if it is from a brand that requires a UPC, or if it is already in the Amazon catalog. Amazon's category table notes that major brands require a UPC in most categories, and that exemptions for private label brands are possible in many of them.
| Buy a GTIN | Apply for an exemption | |
|---|---|---|
| Private label brand | Recommended; works on other channels too | Possible in many categories |
| Handmade products | Optional | Possible |
| Reselling another brand | Not needed; use the brand's code | Not allowed if a code exists |
| Bundles | Needed in some categories | Possible for bundles |
| Selling on Walmart too | Needed; Walmart asks for GS1 codes | Walmart has its own exemption |
Exemption applications need real photos of every side of the product and packaging with the brand name permanently affixed; digital renderings and mismatched brand names are top reasons for rejection. An exemption also has limits: after the end of commingling, products with GTIN exemptions need Amazon barcodes for FBA, and Walmart asks for GS1 codes too. Our guide to how to sell on Walmart covers its rules.
UPC codes and FBA barcodes
The UPC you list with and the barcode on each FBA unit are separate questions. Amazon lets brand representatives in Brand Registry send eligible products with the manufacturer barcode, the UPC, if it is a single scannable code matching a single ASIN and the product is registered to the brand. Everyone else, including all resellers since March 31, 2026, puts an Amazon barcode on each unit.
That makes a GS1 code more valuable for brands than it used to be: with a valid UPC printed on the packaging and Brand Registry in place, you can skip unit labels entirely and use the same stock on other channels. Our guide to Amazon commingled inventory explains the change.
Print the UPC on packaging
No labels to apply if you qualify for manufacturer barcodes.
Register products to the brand
Brand Registry enrollment alone does not link them.
One code, one ASIN
A code matching several ASINs cannot be used stickerless.
Keep the certificate
GS1 records prove the number is yours.
Mistakes when buying UPC codes
Buying from resellers
The GS1 database may show another company as the owner.
One code for all sizes
Every variation needs its own GTIN, GS1 says.
Company name mismatch
License in the name that matches your brand on Amazon.
Reusing a code
A number assigned to one product should never move to another.
Too small a prefix
Prefixes are non-refundable; plan for 1 to 2 years of products.
Buying for resold goods
Resellers use the manufacturer's code, not their own.

Buying UPC codes for Amazon: FAQ
Where should I buy UPC codes for Amazon?
From GS1 US or your country's GS1 organization. Amazon checks codes against the GS1 database.
How much does a UPC code cost?
GS1 US charges a one-time $30 for a single GTIN, or $250 plus $50 a year for a prefix covering up to 10 products.
Can I buy cheap UPC codes online?
They are risky. A resold code may be registered to another company in the GS1 database, so it will not match your brand.
Do I need a UPC for every product variation?
Yes. GS1 says each size, color, style and package count needs its own GTIN.
Do I need a UPC to resell another brand on Amazon?
No. You match your offer to the existing listing using the manufacturer's code.
Can I sell on Amazon without a UPC?
Yes, with a GTIN exemption for eligible products such as private label, handmade or bundled goods.
Is a single GTIN or a company prefix better?
Single GTINs suit a few products; a prefix suits a growing line, regulated products or coupons.
Is a GTIN the same as a UPC?
The GTIN is the number; the UPC is the barcode that carries it. Amazon uses both terms.
Do GS1 UPC codes expire?
Single GS1 US GTINs have no renewal fee. Company prefixes carry an annual renewal fee.
Can I use my UPC instead of an FBA label?
Only as a brand representative in Brand Registry with an eligible product. Resellers must use Amazon barcodes.
Do I need GS1 codes for Walmart too?
Yes. Walmart asks for GTIN or UPC codes with GS1 company prefixes, or its own exemption.
