How to sell on Walmart: from application to first order, by Walmart's rules

Selling on Walmart starts with an application, not a sign-up form. Walmart Marketplace vets sellers, asks for a business tax ID and GS1 product IDs, and expects fast, reliable fulfillment. This guide covers how to sell on Walmart step by step, from Walmart's own requirements and help pages, with notes for sellers who already know Amazon.

  • Walmart Marketplace requires a business tax ID or business license number; Walmart says a Social Security number is not accepted.
  • Products need GTIN or UPC codes with GS1 company prefixes, unless Walmart grants a GTIN exemption, for example for private label items.
  • There are no setup or monthly fees; Walmart charges a referral fee per sale that varies by category and applies to the total sales price.
  • You fulfill through Walmart Fulfillment Services or your own US B2C warehouse with returns capability, within Walmart's performance standards.
  • Walmart says one prohibited product in your catalog is enough to have an application denied, so check the catalog before applying.

What Walmart Marketplace is

Walmart Marketplace is the part of Walmart.com where third party sellers list products alongside Walmart's own. Walmart describes it as a community of established, professional sellers whose assortments complement the first-party offerings on Walmart.com, and says the site reaches 120 million monthly visitors.

The key difference from many marketplaces is vetting. Walmart's beginner guide says sellers should have a history of marketplace or eCommerce success, and that being an established and credible seller is something Walmart takes seriously. A strong Amazon track record is the kind of history Walmart means.

Sellers manage everything in Seller Center: company registration, account settings, reports, catalog performance, items and orders, unless they connect through Walmart's APIs or a solution provider.

The product ID rule catches many Amazon sellers. Walmart asks for GTIN or UPC codes carrying GS1 company prefixes; if you sell products without a product ID, such as private label goods or handmade jewelry, Walmart says you can request a GTIN exemption. Our guide to Amazon private label covers product IDs on the Amazon side.

How to sell on Walmart, step by step

Walmart says creating a seller account takes just a few minutes: sign up with your business email and a unique password, then complete a five-step onboarding process in Seller Center. The steps below follow Walmart's registration guide.

The Walmart Marketplace onboarding steps: verify the business, connect payments, add a display name and customer service details, configure shipping and returns, then set up items and inventory. Verify Payments Profile Shipping Items business and ID processor or Wallet display name, service methods, returns catalog and inventory
Walmart's onboarding steps, in order
  1. Submit your business details and personal ID to complete your Seller Profile.
  2. Set up and connect a payment processor account, from the Payments section in Seller Center.
  3. Add your business display name and customer service information.
  4. Configure your shipping methods and your preferred returns method.
  5. Set up catalog items and inventory; Walmart says it can take up to four hours after adding inventory for setup to complete.

Walmart also offers an onboarding course with a Walmart Marketplace Onboarding fundamentals certification, and advertises savings for new sellers, subject to its terms. Read the current offer terms in Seller Center rather than relying on third party summaries.

Business verification and the Walmart application

Business verification is the first onboarding step. Walmart says it verifies your information with federal, state and international organizations, and that verification can take from a few minutes to two business days. Your tax registration must match your IRS records or government documents exactly.

The form asks for your country of incorporation, state business registration number, business phone number and entity type, such as a corporation, partnership or LLC. Walmart asks you to enter identity details exactly as they appear on your ID, including your residential address, and says supporting documents such as a business license can reduce approval time. Each file must be under 5MB.

Walmart may also ask you to verify that you are authorized to represent the business, using photo ID and facial recognition through a third party service. If asked, you must complete it within seven days, or Walmart says your account will be closed. Sellers incorporated outside the US provide extra documents, such as a certificate of incorporation.

Match the IRS exactly

Walmart's help covers EIN validation errors: enter details exactly as they appear on your documents.

Check every item

Walmart says one prohibited product in the catalog can get the application denied.

Fill every field

Walmart advises providing as much business information as possible to avoid delays.

Watch for ID checks

Identity verification has a seven day deadline.

Walmart Marketplace fees

Walmart says signing up is free and there are no setup, monthly or hidden fees. Instead, you pay a referral fee on each item sold, deducted only when you complete a sale. Referral fees vary by category and product type; Walmart's beginner guide puts the range at 6% to 15%, and some categories use lower rates on the portion of the price above a threshold.

The fee applies to the total sales price, which Walmart defines as the item price plus shipping and handling, gift wrap and other charges. Walmart Fulfillment Services adds a fulfillment fee per unit, based on shipping weight, and a monthly storage fee based on the volume stored and how long it stays.

Walmart calculates WFS shipping weight with unit weight for items under 1 lb, and the greater of unit weight or dimensional weight (length times width times height divided by 139) from 1 lb to 150 lb, plus 0.25 lb for packaging, rounded up. Check Walmart's pricing page for the current fee tables before you price.

A strong Walmart listing follows the same principles as a strong Amazon listing: a clear product title, complete attributes, good images and accurate descriptions. Walmart scores content quality as part of its Pro Seller criteria. Our guide to Amazon listing optimization covers the principles, most of which carry over.

Fulfillment: WFS or shipping yourself

Walmart Fulfillment Services is Walmart's equivalent of FBA. Walmart says WFS picks, packs and ships orders in two days or less, with no inventory minimums or maximums and no setup or monthly fees; it handles order questions and takes returns by mail or in any of more than 4,600 Walmart stores. Walmart recommends WFS to new sellers.

WFS also fulfills orders from other channels: Walmart lists your own website, Amazon, eBay and TikTok. For sellers who ship themselves, Walmart offers Simplified Shipping Settings and discounted labels through Ship with Walmart. You can combine both, choosing WFS item by item after your first item is set up.

How Walmart Fulfillment Services works: set up WFS in Seller Center, ship inventory to Walmart fulfillment centers, customers order on Walmart.com, and Walmart ships and handles returns. 01 Set up WFS in Seller Center item by item 02 Ship in to Walmart centers no minimums 03 Order on Walmart.com two day promise 04 Walmart ships and handles returns stores or mail
WFS mirrors the FBA model on Walmart

Amazon sellers comparing the two can read our guides to how Amazon FBA works and Amazon FBM; the tradeoffs between fulfilling yourself and handing it over are similar.

Walmart's seller performance standards

Walmart evaluates these over rolling periods and says failure can lead to suppression, suspension or termination. With WFS, Walmart meets most fulfillment metrics for you, though not negative feedback. The Amazon equivalents are in our guide to Amazon account suspension, and our Walmart Marketplace management service covers both.

Advertising and growing on Walmart

Walmart Connect runs advertising on Walmart.com and the Walmart app. Sponsored Search ads are pay per click: Sponsored Products appear in search results and on item pages, and Sponsored Brands, a premium placement at the top of relevant results, is available to brand owners registered with Walmart Brand Portal. Walmart also lists Onsite Display and Brand Shop and Shelf.

Brand Portal is Walmart's brand management tool for trademark owners, authorized brand protection agencies and legal representatives. Walmart says to have company information, an active trademark registration number and a verifiable email ready.

Once your US storefront is set up, Walmart says the same account can sell in Canada, Mexico and Chile. Walmart also notes a New Seller Payment Hold after your first sales, which varies by country of incorporation, so plan cash flow for it.

Selling on Walmart as an Amazon seller

Many Walmart sellers already sell on Amazon, and Walmart's vetting favors them: a track record is exactly what the application looks for.

Walmart customers expect the same things Amazon customers do: accurate listings, competitive pricing, fast delivery and easy returns. The practical work is in the differences: GS1 product IDs rather than any UPC, a business tax ID rather than an individual account, and performance standards that assume two day delivery.

Check product IDs

Confirm your codes carry GS1 company prefixes before you apply.

Share inventory carefully

Walmart says WFS can also fulfill Amazon orders; check each channel's rules first.

Keep prices consistent

Walmart scores price competitiveness in its Pro Seller criteria.
